The Scoop

America West is one of the nation's top 10 airlines and the only surviving airline to start service during the deregulation of the early 1980s. Edward Beauvais recognized the potential of a Phoenix-based airline and founded America West in 1983. When it began, the airline had five destinations, three planes, and 280 employees. Today, it stretches coast-to-coast with a fleet of over 100 jets flying out of both the original Phoenix hub and additional hubs in Las Vegas and Columbus.

America West has made its mark by offering lower fares than carriers such as American and Delta, while also providing full-scale service, unlike rival Southwest. Unfortunately, rapid expansion coupled with rising fuel prices depleted the company's financial resources in the late 1980s. In 1991 the company reorganized under Chapter 11 and entered three years of bankruptcy protection. Since emerging from bankruptcy, however, America West has benefited from an alliance with Continental and consistently posted impressive profits.

Getting Hired

Applicants should find out about the specific positions in which they interested and address their resume and cover letter to the department in charge of that position. The company's Web site (located at www.americawest.com/awainc.corpsub.html) and the job hotline describe job openings, as does the job hotline. Both the site and the hotline give specific addresses to which resumes should be sent. About half of America West's employees work in Phoenix, the company's corporate home.

Our Survey Says

America West's travel benefits are among the most generous in the industry, and few America West employees fail to take advantage of them. Those who work in Phoenix, though, don't rush to leave home; they cite the location as one of the best aspects of working for America West. Office morale has been low since the bankruptcy, but many employees comment that "we're working hard to change that now." Some mention, however, that "management has an antagonistic approach to collective bargaining with employees." Nonetheless, those who work for America West enjoy the "independence and responsibility" that the company gives them. They also appreciate the dependent care services program, which features a network of child-care facilities in all America West cities. In Phoenix, employees even have access to a 24-hour facility.
