The Scoop

That Artic chill

No, Alaska Airlines doesn't fly to any igloos or use dog sled teams. Owned by Alaska Air Group, the airline is the largest air carrier between the mainland U.S. and Alaska. The company traces its roots to McGee Airways, which was started by a pilot named Mac McGee with a single-engine, three-passenger plane. Initially offering cargo services between Anchorage and Bristol Bay, McGee joined with several other local operators to form Star Air Lines in 1937. Seven years later, after acquiring three other small airlines, the company changed its name to Alaska Airlines.

Flying first-class

Under the direction of CEO John Kelly, Alaska Air is the nation's 10th-largest airline, Alaska flies primarily through Seattle, Portland, Anchorage and Los Angeles. It is known for its award-winning first-class service and (relatively) good food. The company also is the first major U.S. carrier to employ the Defense Department's "Global Positioning System" on a commercial flight. Parent Company Alaska Air Group also owns Horizon Air Industries, a Seattle-based carrier purchased in 1986.

Like other airlines, Alaska has pursued alliances with most competitors, most notably Northwest Airlines. Through that partnership, Alaska and Northwest can sell tickets on each other's flights. Alaska also has marketing relationships with American Airlines, Canadian Airlines and Continental Airlines, which involve features such as combined frequent-flier plans.

Two studies released July 2000 by the FAA and an independent group found the airline suffered from poor communications, understaffing, lack of training and a tendency to delay noncritical maintenance. However, they found no crucial safety flaws.

Our Survey Says

Golden name

Employees describe the corporate culture at Alaska Air Group as "relaxed and comfortable." The company receives high marks for on-the-job satisfaction, and employees are quick to cite perks such as free Mariners, Sonics, and Seahawks tickets; not surprisingly, there are also "great travel benefits." Despite the reportedly low pay, employees note that they are happy to work for a company that has a "golden name" in the Seattle area and around the Pacific Northwest. In 1998, Alaska Air Group employees shared a record $23.2 million profit sharing payout. Alaska Air Group's employees are also enthusiastic about their co-workers, whom they call "friendly and honest," and note that the atmosphere around the office is made all-the-more relaxed by the casual dress code.
