The Scoop

A software pioneer

In 1982, a small company with a handful of employees began developing software for satellite ground systems. Less than two decades later that company, Integral Systems, has about 200 employees and $28 million in yearly sales. With its headquarters in Maryland, Integral Systems has a wide range of private and government clients, both domestically and around the globe. Clients include the U.S. Department of Defense, the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, GE Americom, AT&T, Loral Skynet, and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Integral Systems hopes that its secondary stock offering will help entice the Pentagon and NASA onto that list.

The satellite masters

Using its expertise in satellite software, Integral Systems created and promoted a system which could be used in a broad range of satellites - including those made by a variety of manufacturers like Lockheed-Martin, TRW, and Hughes, and which requires a minimum of personnel. Designed to be "an affordable and reliable satellite communications system," the EPOCH 2000 has been a highly-successful product for the company. Sales of this universal ground system software were especially brisk in 1997, doubling over the previous year. The Orbit Analysis System, or OASYS module, the company's other commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software product, is another bestseller. Integral also makes systems for satellite payload processing, simulation, and environmental monitoring.

Complicated work

Integral Systems also takes on complicated environmental monitoring projects. The company has supported over 90 satellite missions for scientific, meteorological, and earth resource applications. Integral Systems does not shy away from these more complex projects in its high-tech field. As the demand for satellite services grows in the rest of the world, Integral Systems is also busy designing universal operating systems.

Getting Hired

While still a small company, Integral Systems is also an extremely fast-growing one. There are many opportunities in software engineering and marketing. The company also has a need for software support engineers, programmers, developers, project managers, and systems engineers. Potential applicants should check the "Job Openings" section of the company web site at www.integ.com for available positions. Candidates can submit resumes online, fax them to 301-731-9606, or send them via regular mail to Resumes; Integral Systems, Inc.; 5000 Philadelphia Way, Suite A; Lanham, MD 20706-441.

Our Survey Says

Integral Systems employees have nothing but praise for their company. Many of those surveyed have worked for the company for over a decade and "plan to retire there." That won't be too hard - new hires recieve 500 shares of company stock, and Integral contributes 11 percent yearly to their 401(k). While respondents describe the pay as "excellent," they cite the benefits and flexible schedules as "the biggest reason to continue with Integral Systems." There are other perks too, like an annual "corporate seminar."

The company encourages "fun"; as such, it frequently sponsors company events like "weekend cruises." There are some business trips involved as well, "mainly to places in the U.S. and Asia." One insider describes employees at Integral Systems as "hardworking, friendly, and very talented." This is not a spot for sticks-in-the-mud: the office is filled with "lots of musicians and sports enthusiasts."

One informant claims that the company's hiring policies are "color-blind and gender-neutral." Most concur that "there are a large number of minorities." As for dress code, let's just say that the culture is far from corporate. "You only have to dress up if you're dealing with a customer," says one, "otherwise it's very casual." Even the offices themselves seem to radiate cheer, as respondents rave about the "nice, huge windows."
