The mighty Vorys On March 1st, 1909, business at Vorys, Sater, Seymour & Pease LLP got underway in Columbus, Ohio. Almost a century later, the firm has grown to over 300 attorneys practicing in Ohio's major urban centers, Washington DC, and Alexandria, VA. While the firm offers a full range of legal services, its litigation capabilities have basked in the glow of attorneys such as partner Gregg Murphy. A regular commentator on CNN, Fox, and Court TV, Murphy had also captured considerable attention for his role as the lead lawyer in a Virginia right-to-die case. While accomplished, Murphy keeps things in perspective. "I enjoy commentating, because I got so personally disgusted with the O.J. Simpson case, and what it was telling people about the law," he told The Columbus Dispatch, adding: "But I think there's probably too many of us on TV." Pay your dues, take your vacation Vorys Sater might not put associates through the same grueling work regime as its Wall Street analogues, but the firm hasn't escaped retention problems. In comments to The Columbus Dispatch, partner James Gross sighed: "Certainly we see a lot of movement in the profession of lawyers leaving the practice and going to work for the client." Vorys Sater, however, has taken steps to stem the tide, notably its "Seymour Plan." Established in the 1970s, the plan offers a fund that provides transportation and a stipend for six lawyers (at the firm for five years or more) and spouses to take a vacation anywhere. Vorys also offers a three month sabbatical to attorneys with more than 10 years of service.
