St. Louis toodledoo In 1996, St. Louis' Thompson & Mitchell (founded 1929) and Coburn & Croft (founded 1949) merged, creating Thompson Coburn LLP. Today, Thompson Coburn boasts 273 attorneys, 3 offices, and a full service practice. The firm is home to several Missouri notables, including Thomas Eagleton, Missouri's Lieutenant Governor and U.S. Senator from 1965 to 1987. Scandal strikes! In December 1999, the FBI launched an investigation into allegations that Thompson partner Michael Lazaroff fraudulently diverted $500,000 in fees from clients into his own pockets. Lazaroff, a real estate and M&A specialist, had represented several gambling companies, and reportedly brought the firm millions in business. In June 2000, he admitted that he had inflated the bills of about 50 clients between 1992 and 1999 to pay for entertainment and merchandise that clients believed were gifts. Lazaroff will surrender his law license and will be formally sentenced in September.
