A great big office in Boston Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault cheerily describes itself as one of the "fastest growing law firms in the United States." While this may hold true in terms of business and number of attorneys, the firm certainly has not pushed to expand geographically over its nearly thirty year history. As of February 2000, the firm's 300 attorneys continued to work exclusively from the firm's Boston, Massachusetts headquarters. Tech nation Sticking around Beantown, however, hasn't deterred Testa Hurwitz from developing a reputation as a leader in representing emerging tech companies, particularly regarding securities work. For example, The Connecticut Law Tribune noted in May 1999 that Testa Hurwitz shared a "near monopoly" on Connecticut-based IPOs, along with some New York elephants and Boston heavies like Ropes & Gray and Goodwin, Procter & Hoar. Another notable corporate client has been the peppy Red Hat Software, based in North Carolina. Red Hat turned to Testa for its IPO. "We could have used cheaper lawyers than Testa," Red Hat's general counsel told The National Law Journal in November 1999, "but speed was our primary corporate goal, so we were willing to put our money where our mouth was." Nor does Testa rely on high-profile deals to keep its name on the high-tech map. In 1999, for example, the firms co-sponsored Garage.com's Boston "Bootcamp for Startups." Garage.com, a seed capital matchmaking service, was founded by Silicon Valley guru Guy Kawasaki.
