Dizzying history
Stoel Rives' history ties together illustrious law firms and lawyers throughout the Northwest. The firm's 2000 incarnation is essentially the product of the merger of two Portland firms (Davies, Biggs, Strayer, Stoel and Boley and Rives, Bonyhadi and Smith) in 1979, and a 1998 "joinder" with Seattle's Jones, Grey and Bayley. With offices in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and the District of Columbia, Stoel Rives has grown to over 300 attorneys.
Stoel gets wired
In June 1999, Stoel Rives formalized its Internet-related work into an eBusiness practice group. Partner Jere Webb helped launch the group with 20 lawyers. "We've already been doing this work. I mean, we're up to our eyeballs in this," Webb told Portland's Business Journal, adding: "But we needed to organize ourselves in a way that we would for any other practice area, like mergers and acquisitions or intellectual property law." Notable clients include Intel, Enron, 3Dshopping.com, Adventurebid.com, Buildstream.com Inc., EDGAR Data Resource Center Inc., Legal Anywhere, Mercata Inc., Medicalogic Inc., Reel.com, World Drugs.com and Versuslaw Inc.
