Large and international Founded in Cleveland in 1890, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey has grown to more than 500 attorneys in 20 locations in the United States, Europe and Asia. The firm organizes its expertise under seven rubrics: Corporate, Environmental, Labor And Employment, Litigation, Public Sector, Regulatory, and Tax . As suggested above, one of Squire Sanders' defining features is its international reach. In September 1999, the firm bolstered its international capabilities when it picked up 13 lawyers operating out of rival's Steptoe & Johnson's offices in Moscow and Almaty (Kazakhstan). Squire Sanders' sailing in Eastern Europe hasn't been all smooth, however. In November 1999, The Lawyer (a British legal trade) reported that members of the Ukrainian special forces were called in to remove several organized crime members who showed up at the firm's offices. Larger and more international! In July 2000, the firm announced that it was merging with the faultering San Francisco-based firm Graham & James. The merger ends months of speculation over the fate of Graham & James, a firm which has struggled in recent years. Squire, Sanders & Dempsey will take over Graham's San Francisco, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Beijing offices effective July 16. The deal also calls for an association with Graham's 14-attorney Milan office. In total, the merger will add 126 Graham & James attorneys to Squire's rooster.
