Pentagon beginnings Shaw Pittman's origins lie in the halls of the Pentagon, where founders Brackley Shaw and Ramsey Potts met in 1950. The pair launched their firm in 1958 with two other partners, and quickly established themselves as lawyers on the cutting edge. Indeed, the firm was one of the first to develop a nuclear energy practice in the mid-1960s. Lovin' the high tech Today, Shaw Pittman remains on the cutting edge, with a focus on high-tech that seems to have paid off. "The flagship of our practice is technology," firm chairman and managing partner Paul Mickey Jr. told the Legal Times, adding: "Our work on complex technology transactions here and abroad is growing like Topsy. The growth has been consistent and widespread." If anything, Shaw Pittman has enjoyed healthy growth in terms of personnel - From 1998 to 1999, the firm added 52 lawyers, bringing its total count close to 300 lawyers. During the same period Shaw Pittman doubled the size of its office in tech-crazy Northern Virginia. The outpost boasts over 40 lawyers. U.K. Shaw Pittman 1998 also saw the opening of Shaw Pittman's London office, which, according to the firm, is "predominately staffed by English-qualified lawyers, many of whom are recognized as among the best technology, IT and telecommunications lawyers in the UK." In December 1999, London-based partner Chris Holder led a team of Shaw Pittman lawyers advising MCI Worldcom is a $650 million global telecom and E-commerce outsourcing agreement with petroleum giant BP Amoco.
