Welcome to the big time Thanks to a October 1999 merger, Reed Smith can now boast 600 lawyers located in eleven locations. Outside of Virginia, the firm operates as Reed Smith Shaw & McClay LLP, an organization with roots stretching back to 1877. Within the great state of Virginia, the firm goes by the name of Reed Smith Hazel & Thomas LLP. Throughout the firm, however, business breaks down according to the following areas: Business & Finance Law; Employment Law & Benefits; Litigation; Regulatory & Government Affairs; and Year 2000. Looking abroad Domestic growth hasn't been Reed Smith's only priority. In October 1999, reports emerged that the firm had sat down to discuss strategic possibilities with firms in Birmingham, England. Waxing on the discussions, Peter Tucci, head of Reed Smith's international practice group, told The Lawyer: "We have a New York office, but we are not a New York firm, and we used to working in important cities that are not the principle cities in the country."
