The Scoop

All three branches

Founded in 1962, Patton Boggs firm literature doesn't hesitate to note that the firm "was among the first national law firms to recognize that all three branches of government could serve as forums in which to achieve client goal." While a full-service firm, lobbying is certainly a Patton Boggs specialty - The Legal Times noted that the firm was a "brand name" in lobbying.

"The living heart of Washington money culture"

Leading the Patton Boggs lobbying charge is Thomas Hale Boggs, Jr., chairman of the firm's Executive Committee. Boggs has been described by Vanity Fair as "the living heart of Washington money culture." A glance at Boggs' bio suggests that Vanity Fair, at least in this case, isn't really exaggerating. The son of the late House Majority Leader Hale Boggs of Louisiana and Corinne "Lindy" Boggs, U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, Thomas Boggs was instrumental in getting Congressional approval for the $1.5 billion federal bailout that saved Chrysler, and has served as a presidential delegate on numerous trade missions. Not surprisingly, Boggs' bio notes that he is registered to lobby for over fifty corporations and trade associations, and has developed a substantial practice in representing state and foreign governments.

Patton Boggs and the media

Media conglomerates might look to New York and Los Angeles talent and star power, but, like other massive corporations, keeping their friends in Congress happy requires considerable work inside the Beltway. Accordingly, Patton Boggs has taken on a number of media clients. AOL, for example, tapped partner Jonathan Yarowsky in November 1999 to lobby for open access to broadband cable.

In October 1999, John Fithian, a prominent Patton Boggs partner, surprised many with his decision to leave the firm to become the president of the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO). Fithian had served as NATO's Washington counsel and lobbyist, in addition to work for other trade associations, nonprofits, and phone and pharmaceutical companies.
