At home in the Twin Cities Since its founding over a century ago, Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly has grown to 350 attorneys across the United States and Europe. Oppenheimer organizes its work by substantive practice area, as well as "around several industries including emerging business, financial services, health care, insurance and reinsurance law, medical devices, and transportation." Aggressive growth Oppenheimer Wolff hasn't shied away from expansion. In May 1999, for example, the firm added four lawyers from Paris law firm Gassenbach & Roche to its Paris branch. Of all the firm's growth spots, however, none has captured more attention than California. From 1997 to 1999, the firm's San Jose outpost grew from one lawyer to 15, notably with the poaching of six IP lawyers from the now-defunct Bronson, Bronson & McKinnon. The firm's efforts at growth in Silicon Valley have brought more than just attention. In July 1999, San Francisco's Graham & James filed suit against Oppenheimer, claiming that the firm had conspired with three Graham partners to steal away trade secrets and the entire office. In comments to California Law Week, Graham & James chairman Lawrence Blume snapped: "This is an egregious case of a few attorneys, including a local managing partner in our firm, attempting to wrongfully appropriate and deliver one of our offices to another law firm for that new firm's benefit and for the partners' use as their own capital contributions to that firm."
