Brand name labor law With an exclusive focus on employment and labor law, Littler Mendelson is often held up as an example of a law firm that has successfully branded itself in a specialty area. Founded in 1942 by Robert Littler, the Pacific Coast Director of the War Labor Board, and Thomas Coakley, a California deputy and attorney general, the firm has grown to over 350 attorneys specializing in nearly 50 areas of labor practice. Judging by Littler's revenues, the American workplace sure hasn't gotten any less contentious. 1998 revenues hit $125 million, meaning per partner profits of $325,000, according to The American Lawyer. Tattoo you The firm's partner compensation scheme has drawn some attention, particularly for Littler's insistence on "tattooing," or the practice of allowing partners to get billing credit for a client that he or she brought in, regardless of who does the work. While tattooing prompts criticism from many, the firm's president, Wendy Tice-Wallner, defends the set-up as fostering entrepreneurialism among junior associates, and shortening the partnership track (six years).
