Here's Hinshaw! Founded in the dog days of the Great Depression (1934), Chicago-based Hinshaw & Culbertson began primarily as a litigation firm. Today, however, the firm's 400 attorneys and 20 offices devote themselves to the full range of legal services "in the banking, health care, not-for profit, insurance, manufacturing, real estate and other industries." A firm with substance One notable practice area for the firm is government relations, particularly in the great state of Illinois. In fact, the firm's managing partner and chief operating officer, J. William Roberts, splits his time between the Springfield and Chicago offices. Roberts served as Chief Legal Counsel to Illinois Governor Jim Edgar from 1995 to 1997. In a March 1999 panel discussion published in the Illinois Legal Times, Roberts played down his connections, noting: "Today, while having the right numbers in your Rolodex is important, you can't schmooze your way through it. You've got to have some substance."
