Born in the sixties Haynes and Boone opened for business in 1964, with name partner Michael M. Boone just three years out of SMU Law School. Since then, the firm has grown to almost 400 attorneys, 25 practice areas, locations throughout Texas, and branches in Washington and Mexico City. Are the two founders satisfied with their progress? Not exactly. "We wake up every Monday running scared," Boone told the Texas Lawyer. While modest, the "running scared" MO seems to pay off big for this firm - from 1993 to 1998, revenues grew no less than 74.7 percent. "Too much democracy can kill you." Observers have attributed "Hayboo's" success to numerous factors, not the least of which a handsome client list, which includes AMR, Bank of America, Dell, Exxon, Tandy, and Nokia. Another factor is hard-driving management. Eschewing rule by consensus among the partnership, Haynes and Boone is run by a board of directors and a five-member executive committee. "Too much democracy can kill you," Michael Boone has said.
