Buchanan blooms
Founded in Pittsburgh in 1850, Buchanan Ingersoll continues to grow its business and its presence. The 365-lawyer firm counts no less than 13 offices, and offers wide ranging expertise in the following areas: corporate work, commercial litigation, tax, government relations, bankruptcy and creditors' rights, family law, intellectual property, and labor and employment law. A particular growth spot is health care. In September 1998, Buchanan launched a health care consulting subsidiary, Buchanan Ingersoll Healthcare Advisors. To complement the new group, Buchanan acquired a 13-lawyer health care practice from London-based Beachcroft Wansboroughs in November 1999.

November 1999 also saw the opening of a Buchanan outpost in the Big Apple. The firm announced that new office, located downtown in the financial district, would concentrate on corporate finance and litigation, and would be headed by partner David Sorin.
Not so wacky tobacky
Big tobacco gets sued, and big firms watch their coffers grow. In April 1999, it was reported that Buchanan Ingersoll would join Philadelphia's Duane, Morris & Heckscher in splitting no less than $50 million for their work in Pennsylvania's $11.3 billion settlement with the tobacco industry. Industry observers noted that the fees, to be paid out by tobacco companies over a five year period, totaled $40 million more than would have been billed at hourly rates.
