BSPM makes the list In April 1998, Kansas City's Blackwell Sanders Matheny Weary & Lombardi LLP tied the knot with St. Louis' Peper, Martin, Jensen, Maichel and Hetlage. The resulting firm, Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin LLP, instantly clambered into the ranks of the nation's largest firms. The firm's 300 attorneys work out of seven offices, with affiliates in Guangzhou, Madrid, Manchester, Shanghai and Mexico City. Walking away from conflicts But remember that consolidation giveth, and consolidation taketh away. In March 1999, seven lawyers split off from BSPM, citing the potential conflicts between the firm's corporate and insurance clients. The lawyers announced they would form a new firm, which would still maintain a referral relationship with Blackwell Sanders. Thinking transatlantic Notwithstanding personnel changes, Blackwell Sanders can boast of a widely varied client list, including international giants such as A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc., UtiliCorp United, Phillips Petroleum, and Wells Fargo Bank. To bolster its international capabilities, the firm maintains a branch in London, and has worked closely with UK-based firms, such as Manchester's Davies Arnold Cooper. In fact, with the latter, Blackwell Sanders even developed an exchange program that rotated attorneys through each firm's respective branches.
